How To Attract Birds To A New Feeder

Finch Feeder

A question we hear a lot at the store is, “I bought a new bird feeder, but birds aren’t using it, what should I do?”  Birds are not like most mammals. They don’t have a good sense of smell, so they don’t search for food by scent. Instead they use their vision to discover food sources. Birds may discover your feeder the day you put it up or it might take them a few weeks to find it. Also, if you have other feeders that the birds are used to eating from, you may have to let those feeders empty before your birds will try the new feeder.
