According to the American Bird Conservancy and research shared by the National Audubon Society, more than one billion birds die in the United States each year from window collisions! About 60 percent of birds that initially appear stunned and eventually fly away later die from internal injuries. These numbers are staggering and are alarming to those of us who love birds! I am happy to report that there are a number of ways we can help reduce window strikes and bird fatalities.

First, why do birds hit windows? Most often birds fly into windows because they see the sky and surrounding trees reflected back at them and naturally think it is safe to fly right through. Years ago, I had screens installed on my windows (even my picture windows) to prevent reflections. Another less costly and simpler way to break up window reflections is to install Window Gems, static cling vinyl decals designed to prevent birds from flying into glass windows.

Window Gems refract sunlight into a kaleidoscope of changing colors which warn birds away. Window Gems last for years and never fade – they are also moveable and reusable. Window Gems is a woman-owned company from Mount Shasta, California! We at WBU Woburn LOVE supporting US-based companies and US-made products! Check them out – they really work!
