Check for Birds Nests Before Trimming Bushes and Trees!
Bird nesting season is in full swing right now, so if you are going to trim bushes or trees, please check for nests first.
Most songbird nests are pretty easy to spot and are generally from 6 to 8 inches wide with a depth of about 3 to 6 inches. Hummingbirds are nesting now as well, but their nests are not as easy to spot. Ruby-throated Hummingbird, (the species we see here in Massachusetts) nests are about 2 inches wide and 1 inch deep – so tiny!
If you do come across a bird’s nest, be patient, the birds won’t be there long. The average time between mother bird laying her eggs, chicks hatching and fledging the nest is only about 4 weeks. Baby birds grow fast!
